an engine (done it at least a hundred times) was on my old Datsun 210. Woudn't start afterwards. Finally, I pulled the distributor cap, one squirt of WD-40 and the engine instantly started and ran normally. I use dielectric grease, too.

Oil-based compounds don't "dry." It will prevent corrosion.
